In November, Nutrition Capital Network inaugurated the 2009 NCN Investor Meeting at SupplySide West. It was the first NCN event dedicated to investment in nutritional ingredients & technology and the raw material supply side of the $102 billion nutrition industry. SupplySide West is a proven industry trade show bringing together raw material suppliers, who exhibit at the show, with a range of supplement, functional food/beverage and cosmeceutical finished product manufacturers who attend the two-day event.

The NCN event, which was graciously co-hosted by Virgo Publishing, took place the day before the SupplySide West show floor opened. It featured 10 presenting companies and about 30 nutrition industry investors, including strategic companies from the ingredient and finished product segments of the supply chain, as well as private equity firms in the health & wellness sector.

Presenters gave 10-minute presentations to the group of 60 attendees, then participated in two hours of one-on-one meetings with investors. Presenters ran the gamut from pre-revenue companies to $20 million+ companies, with more than half in the early round or start-up stages of business. The emphasis was on patented and clinically proven ingredients, targeting conditions and health benefits ranging from sodium reduction, antioxidants for sun care, immunity and antimicrobial efficacy to inflammation, energy and metabolic syndrome. Additionally, omega 3s were a hot category, with presenters including an omega 3 company focused on a high concentration product for pharmaceutical applications and a supplier of krill oil and powder, an up and coming omega 3 segment.
